The rock fortress of Sigiriya rising above the forest, Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka compresses more into a week than most countries manage in three — rock fortresses, tea country trains, leopard country, a coastline that changes character every hour of driving. Two monsoons split the island's calendar down the middle, which is why February, with the south and the hills both dry, is when we most often send people. The east coast keeps a separate summer season for those who come back.

Best for

When to go

Dec–Mar
The classic window: south coast, hill country, and the cultural triangle all dry.
May–Sep
The east coast's season — Trincomalee's bays while the southwest takes rain.
