Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is for the steppe and the Charyn canyon — a red-rock gorge that arrives without warning out of grassland the size of Western Europe. Almaty sits under its own wall of mountains, with alpine lakes an hour from the opera house. It is the emptiest country we plan, in the way that empty is the point.
